About the Synoptic paper
The Synoptic paper is designed to assess all the skills you have developed throughout your A level course and all 5 assessment objectives are tested in the exam. It is based on a specific theme, period or genre of writing and you are expected to have a wide knowledge of this.
You will be studying the Gothic. In order to do well in your exam, you will need to:
- have a good understanding of what the Gothic is as a genre, both in writing and other fields such as art
- have a good knowledge of socio-historical context during the time in which the Gothic emerged as a genre, as well as during subsequent periods in which Gothic texts were popular
- have a wide knowledge of Gothic texts. We will study a variety of extracts in class, as well as the whole of Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley. In your own time, you are also expected to carry out wider reading of whole texts and extracts, so that your knowledge is as wide-ranging as possible.
